Reflection On Feminism - 996 Words

I never really understood the term â€Å"feminism†. I will admit at first, I was very hesitant to identify as a feminist and that was due to the negative view the media put on it. I believed it to be an anti-men movement made by females. In all seriousness I would laugh at people who identified as one, I often thought how can you hate men? How can you think one gender is superior to another? and how can you think creating issues out of non-issues will solve all of your problems? As a society, we need to bring awareness to the uncomfortableness of the term feminism and why it is now being used as a synonym to â€Å"man-hating†. According to Bustle â€Å"82% of both genders say they do believe that men and women should be social, political, and economic†¦show more content†¦We need to break the separation and embrace the similarities and differences in BOTH genders. Unlike Watson I was not sexualized by the media at age 14, my friends and I always felt like our teachers were watching us while at school no matter what we did. We were told that we needed to dress appropriately so they boys would not be tempted. If our shorts were too short we were looked at as seeking the â€Å"wrong† kind of attention. Teachers sexualized every part of the female body. We always asked, how can our shoulders being exposed pose an issue. Boys were able to wear tank tops and shorts when it was thirty degrees Celsius outside. Girls needed to be in shorts passed our knees and a shirt that fully covered our chest, shoulders, and backs because they did not want the boys to get the â€Å"wrong impression†. I remember walking to my locker after my lunch break (in the middle of winter) I was wearing sweatpants with spandex shorts underneath and a top. I heard some boys cheering behind me and before I knew it, in front more than half of my school, my pants wer e pulled down to my knees. I did not think much of it to be honest, as it was a silly prank and I was wearing shorts underneath. I was later sent to the office and my parents were called because my outfit was â€Å"asking for it†. There were no repercussions for the gentleman who pulled down my pants or the ones who dared him to do it. These issues are becoming more prominent in grade schools.
